"Sunshine" by Robin McKinley

I admit it. I really enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy. Sometimes I think I don't like Fantasy... but there's so much that I really love that the one's that I don't... that I turn my nose down at. "Oh, that looks silly"... But I read a bunch that's so good.

"Sunshine" is one of those. This is one of those analogues of modern day humans that takes you a few pages to realize that it's supposed to be set in modern day 'Earth' but that there's something very different about the place.

So it's either the present or the not-so-distant future and the humans finished a war with the Others -- vampires, were-creatures, etc. -- within the past 10 years. Much of humanity and civilization were lost, even though we (assuming you're human) 'won'. Our heroine 'Rae "Sunshine" Seddon' works as a master baker for a diner. One night, after work, Sunshine does out a nearby lake, where she used to spend time, and is caught by vampires. Who chain her up with another vampire who they (the first vampires) clearly do not like. Sunshine recalls some magic that her Grandmother taught her long ago that helps her to escape. In a twist, she helps the vampire - "Constantine" - escape through broad daylight... Sunshine!

The book is a fun and quick read, hoppnig through Sunshine's experience of mostly human life in a magic-infused world, where vampires ("suckers"), demons, were creatures, and others are friends, enemies, and complications. Life is hard for Sunshine. But she has friends for help along the way...
